Since launching at the end of September, Bury St Edmunds’ new volleyball club, Bury Bobcats has gone from strength to strength. With visits from GB Beach Volleyball player Chris Gregory helping kick things off, a solid group of volunteers willing to help develop the club and the competitive opportunities provided by the Suffolk Volleyball Association, the club is now well established.
After entering the Suffolk Indoor Series for the first time in November, the club entered two teams in the December tournament. The first team held their own and finished third out of five in Division One, whilst the second team won Division Two so will join the first team in Division One for January.
Meanwhile, four of the club’s youngsters have undertaken their Volleyball England Young Leaders Award and two of these, Joel Hughes and Amelia Hadjianastasi were selected to join the National Young Coaches Academy in Loughborough held over the weekend before Christmas.
Thanks to investment from Sport England, new posts and nets have now been installed at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre allowing the club’s Sunday afternoon sessions to take on new members; both beginners and those with experience. The sessions are fun, lots of games and run from 3pm to 4:30pm. They cost £6 for Adults or £3 for those aged 14-18. The club hopes to regularly fill Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre’s sports hall with people enjoying volleyball every Sunday afternoon and maintain the good performances in the Suffolk Indoor Series whilst working towards entering teams in the Regional Series.
